LONDON MARATHON

On Sunday 13 April, more than 35000 people will run through the streets of London for the 34th London Marathon.

The race:

The London Marathon is a flat course around the River Thames over a distance of 42195km. There are different starting points, but all of the courses join up and all runners finish on The Mall, by St James's Park.

The prizes:

Some runers make money from the Marathon. Prizes start at around 730 euros for twelfth place and can go up to 40000 euros. Winners can also get big bonuses if they break a record.

Slow:

One Englishman took five days, eight hours, 29 minutes and 46 seconds. He wore a 50kg diving suit and shoes weighing 11kg each!

CHRISTMAS TREE COOKIES

HO, HO, HO! This Christmas you can make tea-time into tree-time with these delicious Christmas Cookies. They're fun to make and great to eat. Invite your friends to try them. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Ingredients:

- 280g butter

- 150g suger

- 240g ground almonds

- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

- 250g flour

- raspberry jam

Preparation:

1. Put the butter, sugar, flour, grouond almonds and cinnamon into a bowl. Mix all the ingredients togther and then beat the mixture well. 

2. Take the dough out of the bowl and roll it into a ball on the table. Then wrap the dough in cellophone and put it in the fridge. Leave it there for one hour. This will make the dough firmer and easier to shape. 

3. After taking the dough out of the fridge, remove the cellophane and rall it out on the table. Using a cake mould or a knife, cut he dough into tree shapes. With a strw, make 5 holes in the trees.

4. Put the biscuits on a baking tray and bake them in the oven at 210º for 10 minutes. Then take them out of the oven and leave them to cool for a few minutes. You can eat them as they are, or put two of the biscuits togther and fill them with jam to make a sandwich. Irresistible!

FLYING BICYCLE

A British duo has invented a new way to avoid traffic jams: the flying bicycle. The Paravelo can travel at 40 kilometres per hour at an altitude of 1200 metres. "It works by combining the traditional folding bicycle with a lightweight trailer carrying a powerful fan", says one of its designers, Yanish Read. And you don't need a licence!

CHINATOWN A PIECE OF ASIA IN THE CITY

"I live in a big house in Chinatown, the oldest and one of the largest Asian neighbourhoods" in the US. Everything is written in Chinese, and, apart from my roommate Camille, I must be the only non-Asian girl here. I chose Chinatown because rents are huge in "Frisco": a little apartment costs $1800 a month. But it's nice, and easier to make friends if you share a room. It's also fun. For Chinese New Year, there were two weeks of celebrations, with a big parade. They love parades in the USA!"

HAIGHT-ASHBURY TO SHOP

"San Francisco is the city of Jack Kerouac and the birthplace of hippies. This neighbourhood was a favourite of hippies during the 1960s and the place to be during the Summer of Love. Even Jimi Hendrix lived here. The streets still have that bohemian feel, and there are various boutiques selling second-hand clothing and accessories. You can find prom dresses, retro dresses and great swimsuits. There is even a shop where the clothes are classified by years. It's fun to have a look. And there is always someone playing music in the streets."

ALMO SQUARE A PLACE TO RELAX

There are lots of parks and squares in the city. Alamo Square, of course, is a famous one. There are lots of nice Victorian-style houses nearby - the ones with bay windows, slate roofs and three or four colours...they're called "painted ladies"!" When the weather is good, Washington Square is the place to be. You can sit on the grass and there is always a guy with a guitar. We can chill out all day long here!"

ALCATRAZ ISLAND MYTH

"A guy from my lab did the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, which includes a 2.4kilometre swim from Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. According to legend, it was almost impossible to escape from the island's prison. Camille, my roommate, has made the boat trip to Alcatraz. It was really interesting: you learn a lot about the history of the prison, and you have a terrific view of San Francisco Bay, she said. I'll have to do it when my parents come to visit me.

Britain's favourite family, the Beckhams, are now in Paris.

David and Victoria are famous for sport, music and fashion, but their kids have talents too. Here is their story...

Britain loves David Beckham. 

He is a famous football player who has played for the world's biggest clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and now Paris Saint Germain. He also played for his country, England, for a record 115 games and scored 17 times. David is married to Victoria  Beckham who was a singer in the successful girl group from 1990s: the Spice Girls. 

Her nickname was Posh Spice!

Everyone watched when David and Victoria got married in 1999. The wedding was in a caste in Ireland and was inspired by fairytales. The couple had thrones, just like a king and queen, and they sold the photos for one million pounds.

Children are precious in the Beckham family. Victoria had the couple's first child, Brooklyn in 1999. They have had two more sons, Romeo, age 11, and Cruz, age 8, and also a daughter, Harpere Seven, who was born in 2011.

King and Queen of style are what the press call David and Victoria Beckham. In 2008, David became a top model for an Italian label, and has made lots of adverts...often in his underpants! Victoria has become a big name in fashion too: stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron love her creations and wore her dresses at the Oscars. 

Hollywood has been home for the Beckham family since 2007. David went to play for the club LA Galaxy and when they arrived, they became friends with stars like Tom Cruise. Now they have 16 million euro house in an exclusive are of Beverly Hills. The couple's estimated fortun is 220 million euros! 

Ambassador for Unicef is one of David's jobs. He and Victoria work with AIDS charities and support children in Africa. When David moved to Paris Sain Germain in 2013, he decided to give all of his wages to a children's charity. 

Mum and dad are great exemples for Beckham children. This yeatr Romeo became a model for a big British fashion label. Brooklyn also had a trial for the youth team at Chelsea football club. So the question is, will the new generation of Beckhams be famous for sport or fashion? If they have their parents' talents, they can do it all! 

The queen's birthday parade

The queen's birthday is on 21 of April, but the public celebration in London is in June. When the weather is good! The birthday parade for the queen is called trooping the color. The military gives a royal salute and the queen inspects her troopes. Military bands play music too... but not happy birthday.

From Australia to the USA, surfing is the most popular watersport. Surfers are courageous and agile. Discover this incredible surf culture!

Strong surfers:

Surfing is cool but tit can be dangerous too! Surfers must be strong to paddle on their surfboard in the water. Then they push their bodies up on the surfboard and ride the wave.

Surfboard wax:

Surfboard wax is like a bar of soap! Surfers put it on their boards so that they don't slip. 

Fins for mobility:

Fins give the surfboard stability and let surfers do turns and tricks. Most boards have 1 to 4 fins.

Swimming talent:

Surfers have to be good swimmers. They also have tot be flexible - that's why many surfers do yoga.

Surfboards: 

Surfboards are made of foam and fibreglass. Large surf boards are ideal for beginners and small ones are best for professionals.

Breathing:

Surfers often fall of their boards! So they do breathing exercises to help them hold their breath underwater.

Balance: 

For surfers, good balance is essential. But it's hard not to fall off when you're surfing at nearly 30km per hour!

Wetsuit:

In cold water, surfers wear wetsuits. They insulate and keep the surfer warm. In warm water, surfers wear board shorts or bikins.

CHOCOLATE FUDGE

Christmas is a time when we all love to eat something special. Chocolate fudge is easy to make and special at any time of the yar, so why not try this delicious Christmas recipe and give it to your friends and family?

Ingredients:

- 300g dark chocolate

- 1 can (400ml) condensed milk

Preparation:

1. Open the can of condensed milk and pour the contents into a saucepan with the chocolate. Then heat the pan gently until the chocolate begins to melt.

2. Take the pan off the heat and keep on stirring until the chocolate has melted completely and is mixed in with the milk. Then spread the mixture into a greased 20cm tin.

3. Put the tin into the fridge and leave it to chill until the mixture has become solid.

4. Cut the chocolate fudge into squares and arrange them on a plate. Now you're ready to invite your friends and family to try some. Mmm...Irresistible!
